Sun June release new album 'Somewhere'

Texas based band Sun June return today with their new album, 'Somewhere', released via Keeled Scales / Run For Cover records. Both atmospheric and emotionally honest in equal measure, the record delves deep into an ambient world of adolescent emotion, with the band referring to the album as their "prom" record. "The prom idea started as a mood for us to arrange and shape the music to" they say, adding "Prom isn't all rosy and perfect. The songs show you the crying in the bathroom, the fear of dancing, the joy of kissing; all the highs and lows."

One of many standout moments on the record is 'Bad Girl'. With a dreamy, almost trance-inducing, soundscape, listeners attention is drawn to lead singer Laura Colwell's captivating vocal as she lays bare details of her 'bad girl' youth. Singing of "tearing up an apartment" and "spending all of my cigarettes", Colwell tells of the freedom she took advantage of during her teen years and how, after loosing a close friend in High School, her fear of death became overwhelming. "The song reflects how that fear combined with my own thrill-seeking affected my decisions since" she says. "It cycles through self-destructive choices I've made in relationships to avoid responsibility, and how my fear of loss has lead me down some dumb paths."

Following on from 'Bad Girl' is 'Karen O'; a track on which the band portray the Yeah Yeah Yeah's lead singer as your typical cool-girl party animal, spurring on a night out that's turned sour. "It's about the kind of night you let your heart aches swallow you whole, and you find yourself heading straight towards the things you should be running away from" the band say, adding that the track "explores how we sometimes choose to heighten grief rather than reduce it."

With Colwell's dreamy vocal - similar to that of Phoebe Bridgers - backed solely by reverberating riffs and an unchanging drum beat, Sun June are completely enchanting.
